The Public Works office of the City of Frankfort is located in the Municipal Building at 315 West Second Street. This office supervises the operation of three divisions Sanitation, Street, and Transit. This department is also responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the Municipal Building.

The Public Works Department oversees drainage and engineering issues within the city limits. Development plans are reviewed by this office to insure adequate drainage, roadway sight distance, traffic control, parking, etc. Permits are issued for drive approaches, street cuts, grading, and other types of work performed on city streets or in right-of-ways.

The Public Works Department is in charge of the Sidewalk Program. Sidewalks are being inspected on a schedule determined by the Public Works Department and repair notices are sent to the property owners to repair cracks, holes, chips, uneven surfaces and other defects. Property Maintenance Code Section 303.3B states "Every person or firm or corporation owning all or part of any property abutting and/or fronting upon a public sidewalk or utility strip shall maintain such sidewalk and abutting aprons at his/its own expense and in good repair, free from cracks, holes, chips, uneven surfaces and other defect, and such sidewalks and utility strips free from trash, snow and ice." The property owner has sixty (60) days to comply with the City's notice and must obtain a permit, free of charge, from the Public Works Department prior to construction.
